A friend and I drove about 4 hours from Bangkok to Chanthaburi. We went directly to a resort not far from Thung Phen Forest Ranger Office. We decided to take a night here as the trekking started early next morning and it required a lot of energy. There are a few resorts in this area and they are cheap. Most of them is less than 1,000 THB per night.

We arrived at Thung Phen Forest Ranger Office at 8 am to register. We carried our stuffs, so we did not pay for a porter.  We had a tent, dried foods, a few cooking equipments, sleeping bags, sheets and 6 liters of water which was enough for 2 to stay in the forest for 24 hours.

The rangers gathered all groups into one. The trekking started at 9 am. There was only one trail to go up, so no one should get lost. The rangers let the visitors walk ahead and kept remaining behind to make sure that everyone would be on the peak before sunset.

At the base of the mountain, the forest was wet and there were slugs. Even we had sprayed a slug repellent, but they still could find their ways inside our shoes. But, as we got higher, the forest was less dense, drier and cooler, so no more slugs.

A Canal on the Way

After 4 hours, we arrived at the peak before others. So we preempted the area right under the cliff to sleep through the night. Ten to fifteen others who arrived a bit later also shared the space. Here, we could leave the tent packed and only inflated the sleeping sheets. The cliff was our roof.

Elephant's Back

Around the peak, there were some small hills. One looks like the back of an elephant. Another is a bit farther, the later was the best location to look back at the cliff where we slept.

We were up there on the 5th of December, the national father day. So at night there were fireworks and we could enjoy them just by looking out to the the sky above the town on the ground.

Another Peak Worth Climbing

The next morning we packed and climbed down, which took only 2 hours. We showered at Thung Phen Forest Ranger and then headed to Chanthaburi before driving back to Bangkok.
